Τα τριγλυκερίδια είναι ο πιο κοινός τύπος λίπους (λιπιδίου) που βρίσκεται στο αίμα, με σχεδόν το 95% του συνολικού σωματικού λίπους να εμπίπτει σε αυτήν την κατηγορία.
Το σώμα μετατρέπει τις θερμίδες που δεν χρειάζεται να χρησιμοποιήσει άμεσα, σε τριγλυκερίδια. Τα τριγλυκερίδια αποθηκεύονται στα λιποκύτταρα και κυκλοφορούν στο αίμα για να παρέχουν ενέργεια στους μυς για να λειτουργήσουν.
Παρόλο που τόσο τα τριγλυκερίδια όσο και η χοληστερόλη είναι λιπίδια, το πρώτο είναι λίπος και το δεύτερο όχι, Επιπλέον, τα τριγλυκερίδια εξυπηρετούν τη λειτουργία της παροχής ενέργειας, ενώ η χοληστερόλη είναι απαραίτητη από τον οργανισμό για τη σύνθεση ορμονών και την κυτταρική δομή.
Παρά το γεγονός ότι τα τριγλυκερίδια είναι βασικές πηγές ενέργειας και απαραίτητα για την καλή λειτουργία των κυττάρων, τα αυξημένα επίπεδα μπορεί να εγκυμονούν πολλούς κινδύνους για την υγεία
